Q&A with Ian Doescher, the Publisher
What inspired you to combine Star Wars with iambic pentameter? In 2012, I experienced a confluence of influences that sparked the idea to blend Star Wars with Shakespearean language. I had recently read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which demonstrated the potential for classic works to be reimagined in unexpected ways. Simultaneously, I had been rewatching the Star Wars trilogy for the umpteenth time, immersing myself in the iconic characters and narratives. Additionally, attending the Oregon Shakespeare Festival had Shakespeare's timeless style and themes fresh in my mind. The convergence of these elements - mash-ups, Star Wars, and Shakespeare - coalesced into the inspiration for my project.
Was it intimidating to take characters and plotlines that are so familiar and create something new? As a longtime Star Wars devotee, I do feel a sense of ownership over the characters, as I imagine most fans of the franchise do. Therefore, approaching these beloved figures and reimagining them through a Shakespearean lens felt like a natural, if daunting, undertaking. There is always the risk that my interpretations may not align with how other fans perceive the characters. However, the thrill of the challenge and the creative possibilities make it a worthwhile endeavor.
While there is undoubtedly pressure in adapting such well-known and revered material, I find the process immensely rewarding. Translating the Star Wars saga into the rhythmic cadence of iambic pentameter allows me to explore the characters and storylines in a fresh, imaginative way. By casting these science fiction icons in the mold of Shakespearean drama, new layers of depth and complexity are revealed, inviting readers to experience the familiar narrative through an unexpected lens.
Ultimately, as a devoted fan, I approach this project with a deep reverence for the original Star Wars canon. My aim is not to replace or undermine the source material, but rather to complement it by offering a unique artistic interpretation that celebrates the characters and themes in a new and compelling manner. The risk of not pleasing all fans is outweighed by the joy of creating something novel and thought-provoking that pays homage to two beloved cultural touchstones.
